Rooney Back With A Bang

Real FA Swans u16s travelled to Portlaoise on Saturday afternoon last. On what was a very cold day both sides we left waiting around for an hour as the kick off was delayed. However its was the Swans who got off to a flying start with what was their first attack when Ciara McManus played a through ball behind the Portlaoise back line to the on running and in form Kacey Clynes who slotted past the keeper. In the early stages of the game Swans midfield duo of Nicole Geoghegan and Ciara McManus were in complete control and this contributed to some fine Swans possession. McManus then changed the pace of the game with some great individual footwork and close control before firing from outside the box to make it two nil after just 12 minutes. Soon after a great delivery from a corner from McManus found the head of Lauren Martin in the box. Lauren nodded home the third to really take control of the game. Nicole Geoghegan then came close after a slick give and go with Eva Kelleghan on the edge of the box but this time her shot when over the bar. Swans looked really good down the right hand side today. Aoife Glennon playing at right back had an outstanding game and her link up play with Swans Captain Alison Bane was fantastic. It was great to see Alison back to a little bit of form following her recent spell of injury, however there is still loads more to come from her. Some combination play from the impressive Zoe Mooney and Kacey Clyne had Portlaoise struggling all first half.

At the interval and with the introduction of two more attacking players in the form of Katelyn Rooney and Kacey Geoghegan the signs of a comeback looked non existent for a youthful Portlaoise side. Swans were soon at it again with McManus & Mooney at this again. Creating chances through the middle and out wide Real FA Swans were in no mood for letting up . McManus played the returning Katelyn Rooney in on a number of occasions with Rooney picking up a hat trick and her first goals from open play following her long lay off with injury. Its competition for places right now at the top end of the Swans pitch with Kacey Clynes continuing her unbelievable form for her new club also grabbing 3 today. Zoe Mooney and the impressive Eva Kelleghan also got on the scoresheet today with fantastic goals.

Our defence was solid today, Grace O Sullivan, Aoife Glennon, Lauren Martin , Ciara Heffernan and Oonagh Cassidy all done very well. We will face stronger opposition in the coming weeks which will make for harder work from this unit.

Player of the match despite us having two hat-trick scorers in  our team has to go to Aoife Glennon. Her work rate going forward and her link up and combination play was excellent.

Big thanks to all the parents and players that travelled on what was a very cold afternoon.

Our u10s were set a tough challenge this weekend when they were made to split their team in two in order to facilitate playing in this latest edition pf the PDP format. In atrocious conditions our ladies stuck to what they do best and played a very attractive brand of football throughout With a few girls also starting their first ever game their performances were a testament to their hard work during the week in training and they will be better for it as the season goes on.

A few Special mentions must be noted this week. Brooke Clynes continued her impressive run bagging six goals over two games and Emily McSherry took on a skippers role in the second game helping her new teammates out. As one of the teams competing had to pull out at the last minute it meant that the Swans needed two goalkeepers. Emily Pierce put her hand up and put her teammates first by offering to go in goal. She epitomised everything that is good about sport and deserves a very special mention. Another great day for the Swans and the experience gained will help then through the remainder of the season. Well done girls.

We would like to wish all members of our u16s the very best of luck over the next two weeks as they get stuck into their Junior Certificate mocks. We have no doubt that you will all do extremely well.
